CHICAGO — Newly released body camera footage shows how a traffic stop in Chicago escalated into a fatal shooting incident involving multiple police officers and a driver, CNN reported.
Video shows officers in plain clothes surrounding Dexter Reed’s vehicle. The officers responding to the scene stated Reed was not wearing a seatbelt, according to the report.
Officers instructed Reed to keep his window down and unlock the doors. Shortly after, gunfire erupted, with dozens of shots fired in rapid succession.

Initial reviews suggest Reed fired first, prompting the officers to return fire. Reed sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at a hospital, according to the report. One officer was wounded on the wrist, according to the report.
Alderman Brian Hopkins, chairman of the City Council’s Public Safety Committee, reported that Reed fired 11 shots out of the vehicle window at officers, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
“If we’re going to allow criminals to use deadly force without fear of deadly force being returned, what will that do to society?” Hopkins said. “He fired 11 rounds at these police officers before he was eventually killed. Period. What more do you need to talk about?”
