The June 25 incident began when police responded to reports of an active shooter outside a business where a woman was injured and transported to the hospital, according to the report.

The suspect fled the scene, leading to a high-speed pursuit. According to IMPD, the man fled on a freeway where he reached speeds over 100 mph before he was stopped 11 miles away from the initial scene.

The pursuit concluded at an apartment complex where the suspect crashed his vehicle and forcibly entered an apartment. Video shows officers arriving at the scene to find the door damaged and ajar.

As officers entered the apartment, a woman can be heard screaming for help. Officers run upstairs to find the suspect holding a woman at knifepoint. One of the officers can be heard instructing the suspect to ‘drop the knife’ multiple times.

The suspect did not heed the officers’ instructions and can be seen on bodycam footage continuing to hold a knife to the woman’s back.

The standoff ended when the suspect was shot and killed by officers from IMPD and the Lawrence Police Department. No other civilians or officers were injured during the incident. The woman involved was provided medical aid and released without injuries, according to the report.

IMPD Police Chief Chris Bailey addressed the incident, emphasizing community safety and the tragic nature of such events.

“We don’t want violence of any kind in our community, not like this especially. It is tragic for everyone involved in these situations,” Bailey said.

He also noted that the suspect had been staying at the apartment where the confrontation occurred, according to the report.
