BWC: Man in car linked to robbery points gun at Ill. officers before OIS at gas station

Illinois State Police officers fired shots at the man, injuring him; after the injury, the officers were able to coax him out of the vehicle and render medical aid

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Illinois State Police released body camera footage showing an officer-involved shooting of a man who pointed a gun at officers, WGLT reported.

The Feb. 6 incident began when officers were alerted to a vehicle on Interstate 74 in Champaign believed to be linked to an armed robbery in Texas, according to the report. The vehicle later stopped at a gas station, where officers attempted to take two occupants into custody.

Shooting and arrest

One suspect exited the vehicle and entered the gas station. Video shows officers ordering him to the ground and placing him in handcuffs without incident.

The second suspect remained in the car. Bodycam footage shows officers surrounding the vehicle and ordering the man to surrender. ISP said the suspect raised a gun at officers, prompting police to fire. The footage shows him pointing what appears to be a weapon before multiple shots are exchanged.

The man was injured and later told officers his arm was broken. Officers negotiated with him until he exited the vehicle, at which point they handcuffed him and provided first aid, video shows.

As officers were rendering aid, one officer pointed out a bullet that fell from the suspect’s shirt.

“I stopped a f***ing bullet?” the suspect asked.

He was later taken to a hospital before being transferred to the McLean County Detention Center, where he remains in custody, according to the report.

Charges and ongoing investigation

The suspect faces multiple charges, including three counts of attempted first-degree murder, four counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm and one count of aggravated assault.

The man who surrendered to officers was not injured and was taken into custody for further investigation, according to the report. ISP’s investigation into the shooting remains ongoing.
