FORT LEE, N.J. — Newly-released body camera footage shows an officer-involved shooting of a man who trapped relatives in a condominium and lunged at officers with knives, NJ.com reported.

The Feb. 4, 2023 incident began when police responded to a condominium to find it destroyed with one person trapped inside. Four people had initially been held in the building by the suspect, identified as Mohamed Bounaouar, 42, according to the report.

A standoff with Bounaouar ensued, as the fire department brought a truck to rescue the person who remained in the house, and a crisis negotiator was brought in to work with police officers in apprehending Bounaouar.

Bounaouar, who was on the second floor, threw things at officers trying to speak with him and continued vandalizing the condominium, according to the report.

Police Activity

Video released on Jan. 12 shows Bounaouar emerge onto the second-floor balcony nude, bleeding and carrying a knife in each hand.

“Right here, shoot me,” he said as he lunged toward officers.

Video then shows an officer deploy a TASER at Bounaouar, while two others fired shots at him. Bounaouar was hit, but tried to get up with a knife as more officers came onto the balcony. Officers fired their weapons, hitting Bounaouar again. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
