BWC: Wis. officer struggles with child sexual assault suspect over firearm before OIS

After seeing the gun pointed at him, the Milwaukee Police officer grabbed the suspect’s firearm and worked to wrestle control away from the suspect

MILWAUKEE, Wis. —The Milwaukee Police Department has released body camera footage showing a man and an officer grappling for a handgun before an officer-involved shooting, WISN reported.

The Jan. 6 incident began when officers arrived at the home of a man suspected in a child sexual assault case, according to the report. A woman came to the door before officers knocked, visibly frightened.

Body camera video shows the officer speaking gently to the woman in an effort to calm her down, asking her for information on the suspect’s whereabouts. The woman said that he was sleeping before retreating inside the house and trying to shut the door. “You can go in and get him if you want, but please don’t shut the door on me,” the officer said.

The woman entered the door, leaving it open, but quickly entered through another door and shut it behind her as the officer followed.

Moments later, the woman came back to the door and tried to prevent the officer from going inside.

“Ma’am, I have a warrant for him,” the officer said, entering the room.

Video shows the suspect standing in the room and asking the officer to confirm he has a warrant. After the officer confirmed the warrant, the suspect pulled a handgun from his waistband and pointed it at the officer.

The officer immediately lunged forward, grabbing the gun and trying to wrestle it away from the suspect.

“Let go of the gun!” the officer can be heard saying.

After the suspect did not comply, the footage shows the officer and the suspect struggling over the firearm before the officer drew his service weapon and fired it, striking the suspect.

The suspect survived the shooting and appeared in court from his hospital bed on Jan. 13, according to the report. He has been charged with use of a computer to facilitate a child sex crime, abduction of a child, child enticement, second-degree sexual assault of a child under 16 and intentionally pointing a firearm at law enforcement officers.
