LOS ANGELES — The LAPD has released new video footage of a naked man charging officers with a butcher knife, leading to a fatal OIS, KABC reported.
Footage released on Aug. 28 from the July 29 incident reveals tense moments leading up to the shooting, including attempts by officers to de-escalate the situation inside a woman’s home where a burglary suspect had barricaded himself, according to the report. He also set a fire inside the home.
Video shows officers walking through the home and speaking through outside windows while attempting to speak with the suspect. Officers found him inside a bedroom, where he initially put down his weapons after officers instructed him to do so.
After several minutes, the man rearmed himself.
Initially, officers used beanbag rounds in an effort to subdue the suspect as he lunged at them with the knife. Despite these efforts, the man did not surrender, prompting the officers to retreat and call for SWAT assistance.
Outside the home, SWAT team members repeatedly instructed the suspect to get on the ground. The video shows the man, who was undressed and covered only with a blanket, suddenly running towards the officers while brandishing the knife. Officers then opened fire, resulting in the man collapsing before he could reach them. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
