Video: Security guard who struck bystanders while ‘pursuing a suspect’ points gun at cops before fatal OIS

Video shows that the suspect had earlier driven a black SUV outfitted with police-style lights in pursuit of an e-bike rider; he struck two bystanders and the bicyclist

SAN FRANCISCO — At a town hall meeting, San Francisco police officials presented body camera footage detailing the events leading up to the fatal police shooting of a security guard who allegedly injured bystanders while “pursuing a suspect” on an e-bike, KTVU reported.

The shooting incident occurred on Dec. 20 following a violent series of events involving the suspect, according to the report.

Officials said that the suspect, who was assigned to the Dior store at the time, had earlier driven a black SUV outfitted with police-style lights in pursuit of an e-bike rider. Security footage from Dec. 19 shows the suspect driving onto the sidewalk during the “pursuit,” striking two pedestrians and sending them to the hospital. Moments later, he can be seen hitting the e-bike rider, who had fled on foot.

Police identified the security guard as the suspect in these incidents and planned to arrest him while he was working at the Dior store. Officers, aware that the man was armed, ordered him multiple times to raise his hands. Body camera footage shows the man pulling a handgun from his waistband and taking a shooting stance, pointing the weapon at officers.

“Mr. Hodge raised his right hand with the firearm in it as he pivoted toward the officers,” Acting Police Commander Mark Im said. “He quickly took a shooting stance, with his feet shoulder-width apart, two hands on the handgun, slightly bent forward while pointing at the officers in the street.”

Several officers opened fire, striking the man. Officers rendered immediate aid, but he was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to the report. The case remains under investigation. Police are still searching for key witnesses, including the e-bike rider involved in the initial incident.
