JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Police Department released body camera footage Tuesday of the fatal officer-involved shooting of a woman who stabbed an officer.
According to WJXT, officers were responding to a domestic dispute call on April 11 when 29-year-old Leah Baker attacked the officer.
Bodycam video shows Officer Mechling walking up to a porch and knocking on the front door. Baker opens the door armed with a knife and immediately lunges at the officer.
“I’ve just been f****** stabbed!” Mechling is heard yelling into her radio. The officer commands Baker to drop the knife – which she does, momentarily, before again picking up the weapon seconds later.
Mechling fires at Baker but misses. At that point, Sgt. Nobles arrives on scene and points his firearm at Baker. That’s when Baker, with knife in hand, lunges at Nobles and he shoots her.
Baker falls to the ground but keeps holding the knife. Other officers arrive and a police K-9 grabs hold of Baker’s leg. Another officer rushes in and takes the knife away from the woman.
Baker died at the hospital, according to WJXT. The State Attorney’s Office ruled the shooting was justified, WJXT reports.
