KERN COUNTY, Calif. — California deputies fatally shot a suspect who was holding an elderly man hostage at knifepoint, video shows. Security footage released by the Kern County Sheriff’s Office shows the suspect waving a knife around while threatening to kill the older man in his arms. Deputies ultimately shot the suspect through an open door.
The incident began Wednesday when deputies received a call about a man assaulting a family member, reported Bakersfield.com. More security footage shows the suspect, 25-year-old Deven Moore, walking around with a sledgehammer and knife. Deputies soon found Moore, who ran off despite orders to stop. That’s when Moore ran into a business, entered a guard shack and took an employee hostage, according to the report.
Police said Moore threatened to kill his hostage before deputies shot him. Moore died at the scene; the hostage was unharmed, police said. Note that the video below does not contain audio.
