ORLANDO, Fla. — On Wednesday, Orlando Police released dramatic video of a shootout with multiple suspects earlier this week. Now, three people are facing charges of first-degree murder.
According to WFLA, the incident unfolded as two officers were responding to a tip. Driving in an unmarked vehicle, the officers came across three young men carrying guns on dirt bikes.
The officer in the passenger seat opens his door as the young men open fire, video shows.
“Watch out, watch out!” an officer says as bullets fly.
The officer in the driver’s seat returns fire through the cruiser’s windshield. Bodycam video shows a suspect ducking and running.
“Right now, we’re kind of puzzled about how this happened,” Police Chief Orlando Rolón told WFLA. “[The officers] were wearing a modified uniform clearly labeled ‘Police.’ But keep this in mind: They never had a chance to get out of their car before contact could be made with these individuals. They literally returned fire from the inside of their car.”
Rolón said officers hadn’t been looking for these particular men.
Neither officer was shot. The three suspects were arrested and identified as Jameon Brown, 22, Travis Weston, 17, and Michael Collins, 19. Weston was treated for a leg wound and Brown suffered an arm injury, according to WFLA.
“We are very fortunate not to be speaking about an officer involved shooting where we may have lost one of our officers in this incident,” Rolón said Tuesday.
