NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Sgt. Chris Halstead makes his life’s mission to help people. That’s according to Yale University, where he works with the school’s police department. Earlier this month, Halstead again gave part of himself to help someone – literally.
According to the National Chaplains Association, Halstead donated his kidney to a total stranger who was found to be a perfect match.
“I’ve always been into helping people and I always liked caring about people,” Halstead said in an interview with Yale PD. “Knowing I could live a full life with just one kidney, and I have two, that’s what drove me to donate.”
Halstead said he did his research and learned that although he would undergo major surgery, the recovery would be easier than some.
“The impact on me and my family would not be very significant, whereas the gift that I could give somebody would impact their life and their family forever,” Halstead said.
