STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Police derring-do helped save the day when a despondent man climbed onto a metal finger of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge Tuesday morning, intent on jumping off.
The would-be suicide jumper, described as a 62-year-old Brooklyn resident, told officers, “Nobody can help me,” as he stood on the narrow ledge of the bridge for more than an hour, according to police.
But a band of NYPD Emergency Service Unit officers, tied to the bridge with harnesses, was able to convince him otherwise, with the aid of an officer from the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority, who police say struck up a conversation with him.
