Last year, Police1 columnist covered the commitment of the Greater Cold Spring, Minnesota community to fundraise for a police memorial. This tribute is dedicated to all officers who have fallen in the line of duty, particularly remembering their own Officer Thomas Decker. We are pleased to share that the memorial has now been established and stands proudly before the Cold Spring City Hall.

The young boy depicted in the memorial symbolizes Tom Decker as a child. His experience of getting lost in a mall, being found by a police officer, and then returned to his family, with the addition of receiving an ice cream cone, was a pivotal moment. It was this event that inspired Decker to pursue a career in law enforcement.

Officer Tom Decker was shot and killed on Nov. 29, 2012, as he and his partner performed a welfare check on a man whose family believed was suicidal. Officer Decker had served with the Cold Spring Police Department for six years. He had previously served with the Isle Police Department and Kimbal Police Department for an additional four years. He is survived by his wife and four children.
