MIAMI, Fla. — An officer with the Miami Police Department is being praised for his quick actions after he saved a 10-year-old boy from drowning in a river.
Officer E. Fernandez was patrolling in an area near the Miami River on Wednesday when he saw the child running toward the marina, NBC South Florida reports.
Fernandez caught up to the child and asked if he was okay and where his mother was. The child ran even faster and went into the marina. The officer then looked in the area and didn’t see the child, but he did see ripples in the water. That’s when he jumped into the marina and saw the child submerged underwater.

Body-worn camera video from a responding officer shows the moments after Fernandez pulled the child, who has autism, out of the water as more officers responded to the scene.
“We are all very proud of you and recognize you for staying true to your oath and protecting the citizens of Miami,” the department said on Facebook.
