COCOA BEACH, Fla. — A boy’s close encounter with a shark and a Florida cop’s quick actions were caught on video last week, earning the officer praise from the Cocoa Beach Police Department.
Officer Adrian Kosicki was off-duty and walking on the beach Thursday evening when he saw a boy on a boogie board being approached by a shark. In a bystander’s cellphone video, a man can be heard calling out to the boy to warn him of the shark as the shark’s fin cuts through the water. Kosicki enters the water, just as the shark gets within a couple of feet, and pulls the boy to the beach.
“We’re certainly not marine biologists, educated and trained to differentiate between the various species of sharks, their respective feeding habits, and aggressiveness near swimmers. We just do what we do best—protect the public from harm,” the department wrote. “Thanks to Adrian, we’ll never know what that shark’s intentions were, and that little boy will forever have a pretty cool story to tell.”
