GLENDALE, Ariz. — A German Shepherd was saved from a canal and got a tasty treat in the process.
Officers with the Glendale Police Department responded to the canal for an animal welfare check when a passerby saw the German Shepherd swimming with no route for escape, police said.
Officer Sorenson immediately jumped into action by removing his ballistic vest and gun belt and hopped into the canal to try to rescue the dog. The dog was skittish and avoided the officer, but Officer Downey quickly came up with a plan.
Downey’s wife had packed him some freshly baked pumpkin muffins for his patrol shift, so he knew the dog would be intrigued by the tasty treat.
The bribery worked and Sorensen was able to use the muffin to get the dog close enough that he could grab onto his collar.
The dog was safely removed from the canal and reunited with his owners who lived down the street.
