DELTONA, Fla. — Body camera footage shows deputies save a 5-year-old girl who shot herself in the leg after finding a gun in her house, FOX 35 reported.

In the video, you can hear Volusia County Sheriff’s Office deputies talk with the girl to help keep her calm as they applied a tourniquet to her leg, according to the report.

“She was saying the things that kids say, like I have an ‘owie’ and things like that. I was just like trying to keep her focused on me and not looking at it,” Deputy Nicholas Maletto told FOX 35.

The girl was taken to a hospital, where she is expected to make a full recovery, according to the report. Doctors credited the deputies with saving her life.

“In the moment, all the adrenaline is pumping, and you don’t have the chance to really feel it,” Deputy Tiffany Kagle said. “It’s a good feeling knowing that she’s going to live and hopefully keep her leg.”

Maletto, Kagle and Deputies Valente Estrada and Boris Rodriguez will be given awards for their actions, according to the report.

“The hair on the back of my neck stood up listening to these deputies render aid to this 5-year-old girl. What an outstanding example of decisive action and compassion by all involved,” Sheriff Mike Chitwood said in a post on X.
