UNION TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Two Michigan troopers were shot while executing a search warrant related to a cold case.

MLive.com reports that the troopers were executing a search warrant at a residence and announced their presence when the suspect fired at the officers.

Police said the troopers were attempting to take cover when a detective sergeant was shot in the chest and a trooper received a grazing wound to the hand. The detective sergeant was taken to the hospital and underwent surgery. The trooper isn’t seeking medical attention at this time.

Troopers said the man they believe is responsible for the shooting is dead. Details about the suspect were not immediately released.

Lt. Dale Hinz said that he didn’t know if the troopers fired shots during the incident.
