Mental health calls are becoming increasingly prevalent and challenging for law enforcement officers. It’s estimated that at least 20% of police calls for service involve an individual in a mental health and/or substance abuse crisis, and roughly 50% of fatal law enforcement encounters have noted mental health disorders as a major contributing factor.
When answering a call involving an individual in crisis, the tools officers are equipped with may not always be warranted. In a recent Police1 survey, we asked officers about their confidence level when responding to mental health calls and how pain compliance and verbal commands play a role in these scenarios.
