A couple of weeks ago the gas pedal in my assigned cruiser, a 2005 Dodge Durango, stuck about half throttle. I kicked it, thinking that the floor mat had possibly caused the sticking problem. Then again, just two days ago while traveling to work on the interstate the vehicle began to accelerate, as if by magic, WITHOUT me even touching the pedal!
No matter how hard I kicked the pedal or slid the floor mats back away from it, the vehicle kept gaining speed. During this whole event, I noticed the dash gauges were flashing. I shifted into neutral, got the vehicle off the roadway and turned off the key. The beast finally died!
The Durango was towed to the local Dodge garage where the problem was diagnosed. It was the first time they had ever seen anything like this. The mechanic tells me that the throttle body had corrosion all over it which caused it to stick. If anyone else out there drives a Durango on a daily basis like I do, please be careful. If I had not been on the interstate in very light traffic, the situation could have ended a lot worse.
