BALTIMORE — The Baltimore Police Department is riding in style. Last week, the department unveiled its new fleet of hybrid patrol vehicles.

Police say the 2021 Ford Interceptor Hybrid SUVs will save on fuel and repair costs, according to Shore News Network. The new vehicles come with an array of safety upgrades to better protect officers, said Sgt. Craig Taylor. For example, the cars have external locking seatbelts so that officers don’t have to lean inside the car to secure a suspect.

The fleet’s first 38 vehicles will be unveiled this spring, with 130 more to follow later this year.

In March, police said the department needed to replace nearly 300 patrol vehicles.
