MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. — The latest graduating class of police recruits in Mount Vernon, a suburb of New York City, is cause for celebration, officials told The Patch. The class is the most diverse yet, and is also the first full class of police recruits in several years.
On Monday, Mount Vernon city officials swore in 19 probationary officers. The graduating class is 74% Black, 26% women and 16% Hispanic, according to The Patch.
“I am excited to usher in the most diverse recruitment class in recent memory,” Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard told The Patch. “I am proud to see so many Mount Vernon residents stepping up to the plate to serve and protect their community.”
Also at the ceremony, four officers – two of them women – were promoted to detective.
“The Mount Vernon Police Department welcomes these new probationary officers,” Police Commissioner Glenn Scott said. “They are joining at a time where much is expected of police officers and our department is ready to step up and usher in new energy and excitement. It is a privilege to serve the community you are from.”
