ALBANY, N.Y. — More than 1,100 potential recruits showed up for trooper candidate processing at the New York State Police Academy on Dec. 2. That’s the highest turnout in over a decade, according to state police.

In order to attend processing weekend, candidates must establish eligibility by passing an entrance exam, according to the release. The weekend includes a physical ability test, medical exams and a background questionnaire.

If candidates successfully pass all the requirements, they will be given a conditional offer of employment, according to the report.

The spike in candidates comes after Governor Kathy Hochul agreed to raise the application age limit from 29 to 34. The state police received 12,691 applications to take the entrance exam in October 2023, according to the report.
