LOWER MERION, Pa. — Lower Meiron officials have opened up their attempt to hire new police officers under its updated rules.

Just hours after the Lower Merion Board of Commissioners voted to eliminate the college requirement for new police officers, the department announced that it is now accepting applications for probationary police officers.

According to a posting on the hiring page of the township website, the police department began accepting applications for the position of probationary police officer on Feb. 20 . Applications must be completed, returned, and received by Monday, May 5 , at noon.

Its webpage also highlights the starting pay of $80,000 to $90,000.

In early Feb., Lower Merion officials said the police department was down 17 officers from its authorized strength of 136.

The written test takes place on May 17 at the Harriton High School cafeteria.

A physical agility testing takes place on Saturday, May 31 , and Sunday, June 1 , if needed, at the Harriton High School track, 600 North Ithan Ave. , Rosemont, Pa. 19010. Sign-up information will be provided based on the written examination results.

Applications can be downloaded from the department’s recruiting webpage at www.joinlmpd.org, or they can be picked up at the front counter of the Lower Merion Police Station , 71 E. Lancaster Avenue , Ardmore, PA 19003.
