The incident began when the suspect, armed with a hammer, demanded that a woman give him her car keys. The car was spotted by the Miami-Dade Police Department, which then requested assistance from the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), according to the report. The driver attempted to flee, leading to a high-speed pursuit.

FHP troopers initially attempted to stop the vehicle using a PIT maneuver, but the SUV regained traction and continued fleeing, video shows. After a second PIT maneuver, the driver lost control and the SUV overturned, coming to a stop on its side.

The suspect was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries before being taken into custody, according to the report. Jail records show the suspect faces charges of grand theft of a vehicle, attempting to flee or elude police officers while causing injury or damage during a crash and driving without a license. His bond was set at $11,000.

The woman who owned the car is now seeking public assistance to replace it so she can continue caring for her disabled brother, according to the report. “Thank God we are alive,” she said.
