CEDAR HILL, Texas — The Cedar Hill Police Department released dash camera video showing the moment a suspect opened fire on officers during a vehicle pursuit, NBC DFW reported.

Police Chief Ely Reyes stated that plainclothes officers from the department’s Criminal Investigation Division were searching for a man wanted for two felonies when they spotted him, according to the report. The officers attempted to detain the man, but he managed to enter his vehicle and drive away.

The officers, soon joined by marked cruisers, pursued him down a freeway. The man exited the highway, opened the driver’s side door and fired at least one shot at the officers.

In the dashboard camera video released on June 28, one officer is seen returning fire through his windshield. The chase ended when the suspect exited his car and appeared to continue firing at police. Officers returned fire, striking the suspect at least once.

Police provided first aid and the suspect was taken to a hospital where he remains in critical but stable condition, according to the report.

Reyes noted that the suspect has an extensive criminal history, including burglary, armed robbery and felony possession of a firearm, according to the report. He also faces charges of felony evading with a motor vehicle.
