Robert Coogan, owner and operator of R.E. Coogan Heating Inc. in Warwick, Rhode Island, has become a passionate advocate for law enforcement, particularly during a time when public sentiment toward the profession began to decline in 2020. In response, Coogan launched “RI Back the Blue,” a grassroots initiative aimed at demonstrating unwavering support for police officers across the state.
Through “RI Back the Blue,” Coogan organized vehicle caravans to visit local police stations, rallied businesses to deliver meals to officers, and created sweatshirts to symbolize solidarity with law enforcement. His dedication to supporting officers extended far beyond symbolic gestures, as he consistently sought opportunities to make a tangible impact.
When Coogan purchased a new van for his business, he lent it to the Warwick Police Department before incorporating it into his fleet. During that time, the van was used to deliver holiday donations, including over 600 gifts for elderly residents as part of his “Elves for Elders” initiative. It was also instrumental in delivering toys to the local Boys and Girls Club for their annual holiday gift marketplace, with the vehicle proudly decorated in Warwick Police decals.
Coogan’s support for law enforcement extends to individuals in need. When a young Providence police officer suffered a stroke, leaving him partially disabled, Coogan personally stepped in to help, repairing a water heater leak in the officer’s home on his own time. His commitment to officer wellness is further evident in his $10,000 donation to seed the Rhode Island Police Chiefs Association’s statewide Officer Wellness Program, which supports the mental and physical health of law enforcement officers.
In addition to his philanthropic efforts, Coogan joined the Board of Directors for the Warwick Police Athletic League (PAL). His leadership has been pivotal in organizing the PAL’s annual golf tournament, achieving record-breaking participation and fundraising results.
