The weather at SHOT Show Industry Day at the Range, or what is simply known as Range Day, is always a surprise. Some years it’s warm and calm and others it’s cold and rainy. This year, my Kestrel Drop D3 showed it was cold and dry at 44.5 degrees and 19.4% humidity.

There were so many things to see, but here are a few items I think will be most interesting to my readers.

Storage solutions for tactical professionals

Truckvault was showing off its as yet unannounced Magpul Daka grip drawer inserts, which will securely hold and protect the contents even during high-speed pursuits. Because the Daka modules are semi-rigid, they can stack so you can put two or more levels of gear into one drawer and access each level quickly.

Another coming attraction is the Truckvault-branded Sidio Crate, which is made of hard plastic with a rubberized floor and clear plastic vertical inserts. The crates let you move organized gear or paperwork from office to vehicle to command post and back again. Watch for these announcements shortly.

Training and performance enhancements

I got a chance to shoot a .308 at the InVeris Training Solutions Location of Miss and Hit (LOMAH) system. LOMAH registers the passing of the bullet, computing the bullet’s location, and presents a graphical image of shot location on the target, appearing on the shooter’s Firing Point Computer (FPC) over a Wi-Fi connection. I hit the 1m diameter bullseye twice at 340 yards under gusty conditions with a scoped .308 bolt action and no shot computer.

Performance-driven magazines

Mec-Gar is the world’s largest supplier of OEM magazines. The company added Staccato to its stable by supplying 18-round Glock 17-compatible mags for the new HD line. Unlike OEM Glock mags, the Mec-Gar mags are all-metal and coated with an anti-corrosion and anti-friction coating. The coating makes them easier to load, faster to shoot and they drop freely. They should be available to dealers in early February, with capacity-limited versions coming soon afterward.

Next-level tactical optics

You probably know about C&H Precision from the company’s RDS adaptor plates. Director of Marketing Travis Tipps tells me that customers were griping about problems with RDS, including some being built outside the USA, so they decided it was time to build their own optics. While the launch units are made in China, manufacturing will soon move to a 50,000-square-foot plant in Georgia. They offer two enclosed pistol optics, a rifle optic and a first focal plane 2-12x LPVO. The EDC pistol optic comes in red multi-reticle for $248.99; duty optic comes in red or green 3 MOA or multi-reticle for $324-$349, and the illuminated LPVO sells for $999.

Home defense options

Does your family need home protection but you don’t want the kids to have access to firearms? How about pepper projectiles as an alternative? Sabre’s new .58 dia. pistol style launcher uses magazines that can be pre-loaded with seven projectiles and a CO2 canister, ready to be popped into place and launched at an attacker. Each kit comes with the launcher, 7 each inert and active projectiles, and 2 canisters for a cost of $150.
