ENCINITAS, Calif. — A man who stole his mother’s car despite her restraining order against him barricaded himself in her home, shot two San Diego County sheriff’s deputies, and then killed himself early Thursday after a 10-hour standoff, authorities said.

Both deputies are expected to survive. One underwent surgery for a severe leg injury and the other was treated for a grazing fragment wound to his forehead and released.

He returned around to the Leucadia neighborhood of Encinitas, a suburb north of San Diego, about 3 p.m. Wednesday and deputies responded. The gunman refused to leave the house as ordered, so deputies lobbed tear gas into the house, Fraser said. He opened fire and wounded the deputies.
