YORK COUNTY, Neb. — A police K-9, an innocent driver and a suspect died Tuesday night in a train crash in Nebraska.
The tragic night began with a traffic stop, according to KETV. The suspect, 43-year-old Joseph Stoltenberg, stole a cruiser with a K-9 inside, prompting a police pursuit. Stoltenberg ultimately crashed into an uninvolved driver, which pushed both cars into a passing train.
The second driver was identified as Kyle Ediger, a beloved math teacher at a local school. Stoltenberg, Ediger and K-9 Nitro all died on impact, police said.
Sheriff Paul Vrbka said the K-9’s handler is struggling after the incident.
“I’m worried about the handler of the dog,” Vrbka told 1011 Now. “He went home early last night and he was shook up. I mean, that’s his shift partner that he works with and it’s just like anybody that has a dog, you bond with that animal.”
K-9 Nitro worked in illegal narcotics detection, according to KLKN TV.
