HATBORO, Pa. — Pennsylvania police officer Ryan Allen will not recover from a medical emergency that left him incapacitated last year, his family said on Friday. Allen suffered a heart attack and serious brain injury after he was stung by a bee in October, reported ABC 6.

Allen’s wife, Whitney, shared the somber update in a Facebook post.

“We have learned that Ryan’s anoxic brain injury is even more devastating and extensive than we even first knew or could understand,” Whitney wrote. “The swelling in his brain has subsided and a recent MRI revealed shrinking of his brain and that crucial portions of his brain are no longer there. Ultimately, we have been told by his medical team there is no chance that he will recover in any meaningful way.”

Allen will be discharged from rehabilitation to spend his remaining days in hospice with loved ones, his family said.

“As you can imagine, this decision is heartbreaking as we had so much hope that Ryan could recover,” Whitney continued. “We want to do what is best for Ryan and that is to give him his freedom and peace after so much trauma and pain.”

A GoFundMe for Allen’s hospital bills will be used to pay for private nursing care during his remaining days, Whitney said.

Allen joined the Hatboro Police Department in 2013 and helped start the agency’s first K-9 program, according to PennLive.
