OMAHA, Neb. — The Nebraska chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union is accusing Omaha police of a pattern of brutality, according to reports.
The civil liberties group wrote a letter to the federal Justice Department Tuesday asking it to investigate, the Sioux City Journal reported. Local ACLU director Amy Miller said Omaha residents have complained to her office about treatment of arrestees, including Robert Wagner, whose arrest in May was caught on video.
In the video, a group of Omaha police officers kicks and punches Wagner, who later filed a complaint over the arrest.
The Omaha Police Department said in a statement it strives for transparency and that regular reviews of use-of-force incidents are normal business practices in law enforcement agencies.
“If a citizen group feels the need for the Department of Justice to review these events, we welcome the review,” the statement reads.
