Say goodbye to wearing men’s boots in smaller sizes — here’s how a purpose-built women’s duty boot makes all the difference on duty

I wore the T8 Athena LE boots on and off duty for six weeks. Here’s a look at how they performed in the real world.

In law enforcement, the wrong boots can ruin your day before you even hit briefing. For decades, many female officers have had to make do with men’s boots in smaller sizes, sacrificing fit, comfort and support in a job that demands all three.

The Garmont T8 Athena LE aims to change that. Specifically engineered for women in uniform, this boot offers thoughtful design features that directly address the anatomical differences in women’s feet without compromising tactical performance or professional appearance.

I wore the T8 Athena LE boots on and off duty for six weeks, including in patrol conditions, unpredictable Florida weather and as formal wear with my Class A uniform. Here’s a look at how they performed in the real world.

First impressions: Sleek, professional, durable

Out of the box, the Garmont T8 Athena LE makes an impression. These calf-height tactical boots have a clean silhouette and polished full-grain leather lower that immediately signals quality. A polyester fabric upper adds breathability while reducing the overall weight, which is just 390 grams per boot.

What sets this boot apart is that it’s not just a smaller men’s boot marketed to women.

The boots look sharp and polish beautifully making them an excellent option for dress uniforms and ceremonial details. But form means nothing without function. Fortunately, the T8 Athena LE doesn’t stop at good looks.

Women-specific design that matters

What sets this boot apart is that it’s not just a smaller men’s boot marketed to women. It’s built based on female-specific attributes, accounting for key structural differences in a woman’s foot offering:

  • Increased arch support
  • A slightly raised heel to support a shorter Achilles tendon
  • A narrower heel pocket and throat to match typical female proportions.

These features aren’t marketing fluff, they genuinely improve comfort and alignment throughout long shifts. The dual-density EVA midsole adds another layer of support and shock absorption, reducing foot fatigue over long hours on concrete and asphalt.

Real-world use: From rain to roll call

During my field testing, I wore these boots through several conditions, including Florida thunderstorms, large puddles and muddy yards. While they aren’t waterproof, I was surprised my feet stayed dry even after prolonged exposure to rain and puddles. The full-grain leather did an excellent job repelling water, and the overall construction held up under pressure. They also cleaned up beautifully after being in the mud for hours.

The Garmont Traction Formula Diamante outsole offered reliable grip, with specialized climbing and braking zones that made moving across uneven terrain feel stable and secure. I never felt off balance during calls for service.

Comfort and fit: One drawback, one big improvement

Now for the cons, fit was my only real issue, and even that’s improved since my original pair was issued.

I have wide feet, and when I first received the boots, Garmont only offered them in standard width. To get a wearable fit, I had to size up to a 7.5. While the boots still performed well, the narrow throat (the entry point) made it difficult to get them on quickly, especially at 4 a.m. while trying not to wake up my sleeping husband.

That said, Garmont listened. The company now offers both regular and wide options, which is a huge improvement. Officers with wider feet can get the right fit without sacrificing performance or having to size up.

If Garmont adds a side zipper, I would 100% consider these for full-time patrol use. The current pull-on design is sleek and secure, but a zipper would add much-needed ease for quick changes.

Best use case: Dress boots with tactical edge

Although I tested them during routine patrol work, I’ve since transitioned these into my Class A rotation. The polishable leather, clean design and solid structure make them perfect for inspections, special events and days when appearance matters just as much as function.

They’re also lightweight enough to wear for extended periods without fatigue, making them a great choice for off-duty wear or range days.

Final assessment

The Garmont T8 Athena LE is a high-quality tactical boot for female officers that delivers comfort, structure and style without compromise. At around $160 retail, it’s an investment, but one that pays off in both performance and comfort. This boot offers:

  • Women-specific design that fits and supports properly
  • Excellent polishable leather
  • Stable outsoles with great traction
  • Available in regular and wide widths.

If you’re looking for a duty boot that respects the fact that you are not built like your male coworkers and you want something that can keep up with everything from thunderstorms to inspections, this is a strong contender.
